What is covered
Are you paying too much for your insurance? We can normally offer a more competetive price. Why not check us out. Your Contents insurance policy will cover all the things you would take with you if you moved home. i.e. Furniture, rugs, household goods, kitchen equipment, food and drink, televisions, video, computer and audio equipment, clothing, personal effects, and your valuables. Other items such as boats, caravans, trailers and cycles can often be added to the basic policy.

The sum insured is the total amount of money for which your contents are covered. It is the most your insurance company will pay, even if all your goods and chattels are totally destroyed - say by fire or explosion, so it is up to the you to ensure you value your contents correctly. If you undervalue your possessions, your insurers will not make-up the difference. In fact they could reduce your claim under the average clause.

What am I covered against
Most policies will cover you for the loss or damage to your possessions, whilst in your home, by the following

  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Lightning
  • Storm & Flood
  • Malicious damage
  • Falling trees
  • Subsidence
  • Damage by water from tanks and pipes
  • Damage by oil from heating boilers or tanks
  • Impact by aircraft or vehicles.

Some policies also include accidental breakage of mirrors, glass tops to furniture and fixed glass in furniture. You can often extend your policy to cover items such as televisions, videos, home computers and audio equipment against accidental damage.

Extensions to the policy
All Risks extensions can be arranged on your Policy to cover accidental damage to or loss of valuable items which you take out of your home. This "all risks" extension will cover items like jewellery, clothing, cameras and sports equipment.

What is not covered
You should always consult your policy documents or ask your insurance adviser about policy exclusions. All policies, however, exclude theft of property, unless the property has forceful and visible signs of entry. Most policies will also limit the cover for paintings, ornaments, jewellery or other high value items. These can be added by extensions to the policy.

What about claims
With an "As new" policy you will be paid the full cost of repairing damaged items or the cost of replacing them with equivalent new articles if they are destroyed or stolen . A deduction will be made from your claim to account for wear & tear and depreciation on items such as clothing and bed linen. You will also have to pay the first part of a claim yourself - the policy excess.
This, however, can be removed from some policies on payment of a further premium.
